Bedroom producer phase FAQ: why bass disappears in mono
Headphones lie. Phone speakers and Bluetooth earbuds often fold stereo toward mono. If kick, bass, or vocal body vanishes on fold, L and R are fighting. This FAQ covers why that happens, polarity vs phase, and a free fix after timing hygiene.
Download PHIXER free Watch tutorial
PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux). Amount / From / To rotate problem bands so mono fold keeps low end without flattening stereo. It is not a polarity button, not a time-aligner, and not a widener.
Why does bass disappear in mono?
L/R cancellation
When left and right carry related energy out of phase at low frequencies, a true L+R sum cancels that band. Headphones keep channels separate, so the hollow only shows on phone / mono fold.
Width tools hide the problem
Haas delays, stereo imagers, and stacked sample packs can sound huge in cans and thin on a speaker. Prove it with a null-test / correlation check.
Dual paths fight
DI+cab, top/bottom snare, vocal doubles, dual-mic guitar: polarity or delay often fix it. If cancel is band-specific after that, you need frequency-aware rotation, not another Invert click.
Polarity vs phase (bedroom short version)
- Polarity invert (Ø) flips a whole path 180°. First fix for wrong-wired cables, DI+mic, top/bottom.
- Phase / timing is delay between paths. Sample-align when the hollow is a timing smear.
- Continuous phase rotation (PHIXER) turns problem bands gently for leftover stereo fights after hygiene.

Bedroom FAQ
Q: My mix is fine in headphones. Why check mono?
Most listeners get a fold: phone speaker, Bluetooth, club mono matrix, YouTube downmix. If bass disappears there, the release will too.
Q: Is Invert Phase enough?
Often yes. Flip one path, re-check mono. If body returns, stop. See polarity vs continuous rotation.
Q: What is a null test?
Hear cancel on purpose (sum, or flip one side). Habit: stereo null test / correlation check workflow.
Q: When is the free fix (PHIXER) the right tool?
After polarity and timing, if a stereo bed still cancels by band in mono. Not for denoise, not for mono sources, not as a widener.
Q: Will PHIXER replace Auto-Align / RX?
No. Time-align and RX-style repair are different jobs. PHIXER is residual continuous L/R phase rotation only.
30-second bedroom habit
1. Mono-check
Utility Width 0%, mono bus, or phone speaker. Note what disappears.
2. Polarity / timing
Ø and sample-align real dual paths. Re-check mono.
3. Null / correlation
Prove cancel. Guide: fierce-yacht-ghx9.
4. PHIXER for residual spectral fights
Dial Amount / From / To. Mono-check again. Checklist: soulful-canyon-y843.
When NOT to use PHIXER here
- A polarity flip already restores mono body.
- You need denoise / click repair (wrong class; see vs RX-style).
- You want PHIXER as a widener or Haas delay.
- The source is already mono.
Quick path: Phone mono-check → polarity / timing → null-test → PHIXER only for leftover continuous L/R phase fights → mono-check again.
